I began the poem with a free-write about Sister Lucy, wove in a few lines from Rumi, a quote from Rilke, and a passage from Estes connecting the bears’ transformative and regenerative powers to many goddesses around the world. I wanted to remind myself and readers that the Universe remembers us always, and when we are at our most despondent “a great wind” may be “bearing us across the sky.” In other words, unseen, mysterious forces operate in the world that we can only glimpse through prayer, mediation, nature, and art, so we must take heart, and be ready to answer that Divine Messenger when he/she knocks at our door. I wrote the poem during our nation’s shut down when darkness seemed to cover the sun. The poem was written fairly quickly with few revisions. The experience felt a little like levitation, I imagine! There was a joy in writing “Lucy,” in creating the poem using memory, Rilke, Rumi, Estes, and Nordic folklore. What was your experience like writing “Lucy”? Was it written all at once or not? During the following winter, we exchanged emails in which Susan told me about her creative process, her sources of inspiration, and what her hopes for the coming year. Susan Evans’s poem “ Lucy the Nun With the Green Socks” appeared on Metapsychosis website in Autumn 2020. Stock Socks (on a Clothesline) - no attribution

When I met with his senior team, there was a lot of finger-pointing - everyone blaming each other - which is a very telltale sign of dysfunction and lack of accountability. Ironically, he was the one who hired most of his senior team and yet never held them accountable for their lack of performance. He was keen on me evaluating his senior team as he was very critical of his people. Some of the issues were related to the pandemic, as many of his clients shut down and reduced headcount but many of his problems started way before then, and the pandemic just brought it to the forefront. His clients owed him millions of dollars, with little intention of paying anytime soon and he had to borrow money to pay employees. His key employee left him and became a competitor and took part of his team as well. The consequences of a dysfunctional team dynamic in action.Ī client who was in serious financial and emotional trouble asked me if I was able to help him rebuild his company after he had lost half of his revenues, half of his people and went into significant minus territory in terms of profits. Walden is a work of many gaps and contradictions, a work that seems to keep the reader off balance. It is not an easy book for a reader - especially a first time reader - to sort out and to find order in. The question of its structure has puzzled many critics, with some focusing on the cycle of the seasons as symbolic death and rebirth, and others on whether it is unified in spite of the oppositions it contains. Nor is it autobiography, although much of it is based on Thoreau's life at Walden pond. This book is not a novel, a narrative poem, or a play there is no clear story line, no plot line. Chapter XIV: Former Inhabitants and Winter Visitors.Chapter II: Where I Lived, and What I Lived For. The Survivor and Others An anthology of seven Lovecraft stories (two novelettes and five shorter stories), found posthumously among "his papers," completed by Derleth. Thanks for your interest, and be sure to look at my other auctions for additional Derleth books and other classic hardcovers. I simply wish to report the condition as I see it. I have tried to represent the condition to the best of my knowledge, although once again I must state that when it comes to antiques and collectible volumes, I am strictly an amateur, and only know a little of the jargon. Please see specific notes below regarding the condition of this item. I can try to post additional photographs if you feel it's urgent. If it makes a difference in your bidding, please direct specific questions to me and I will endeavor to accommodate you. I have left "First Printing" unchecked because I would rather err on the side of caution. I am not an expert in antique or collectible books, but it would appear that these are all first printings. Unless noted, all of these books are signed by Mr. My maternal grandmother was a friend and correspondent of the author, who would send her a copy of every book he ever wrote. General note regarding our auctions: We are letting go of a large volume of August Derleth books. What is the significance of the scene where Jerry encounters the hippies? Why do people fear a realistic portrayal of life? What is the relationship between looking at the “good and evils” of life to “disturbing the universe”?Ħ. This is the setting of Shantaram.Īpart from having this highly unusual personal background, Greg Roberts is a very gifted writer. He set up a free health clinic in the slums, acted in Bollywood movies, worked for the Bombay mafia as a forger, counterfeiter, and smuggler and, as a gun-runner, resupplied a unit of mujaheddin guerrilla fighters in Afghanistan. For most of this period he lived in Bombay. In July 1980 he escaped from Victoria's maximum-security prison in broad daylight, thereby becoming one of Australia's most wanted men for what turned out to be the next 10 years. In 1978 Roberts was sentenced to 19 years imprisonment as punishment for a series of robberies of building-society branches, credit unions, and shops he had committed while addicted to heroin. Shantaram is a novel based on the life of the author, Gregory David Roberts. It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured. Guha includes vivid sketches of the major “provincial” leaders, but also writes with feeling and sensitivity about lesser-known Indians-peasants, tribals, women, workers, and Untouchables. Moving between history and biography, this story provides fresh insights into the lives and public careers of those legendary and long-serving Prime Ministers, Jawaharlal Nehru and his daughter, Indira Gandhi. Taking full advantage of the dramatic details of the protests and conflicts that helped shape the nation, politically, socially, and economically, Ramachandra Guha writes of the factors and processes that have kept the country together, and kept it democratic, defying the numerous prophets of doom. Told in lucid and beautiful prose, the story of India’s wild ride toward and since Independence is a riveting one. Zukav hypothesized that the world is probabilistic–or made of probability waves–and events unfolding in time are probability crystalizing as it is being observed. Then the Light-Slit experiment showing how light can have two possible outcomes, but the actual outcome depends on how it is observed. Zukav went on to describe the monumental experiments that illustrated the strange wave-particle duality of light as according to Young’s experiment and Einstein’s experiment. Playing on these words, the author unfolded the history of quantum mechanics with intrigues. The author, Gary Zukav, started by explaining the peculiar title, “Wu Li”, which is a Chinese phrase that could mean nonsense and physics. What a combination! “Wu Li”: Nonsense Physics Instead, I was up the entire 13 hour flight mesmerized by author’s intuitive explanation of quantum mechanics and its possible ties to faith. I decided to try it, figuring that at worst it canbe a good sleep aid. I came across The Dancing Wu Li Masters, not a kung-fu novel, but an easy to read e-book on quantum mechanics. My business travels often require long flights for which I needed something to entertain myself with. One of the really amazing things about the Lusitania saga was that, at the time, there existed in the admiralty a super-secret spy entity known as Room 40. On how much British intelligence knew before the attack And yet he managed to kill about 1,200 people with the press of a button. His best friend in the submarine service described him as being a guy who couldn't hurt a fly. You know, as a young guy, he was already one of the deadliest, most skilled submarine commanders of the war. I found to be such an interesting character, and frankly I wouldn't be surprised if readers have a little bit of sympathy, or at least empathy, for him.
